Abstract

Objectives: The goal of this study was to summarize #epidemiologicalstudies of dementia in China, Japan, America and Europe, and to make comparison of the prevalence rate and risk factors in these countries to #analyze differences among them.

Methods: Electron¬ic databases including PUBMED, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE, CNKI, CBM, VIP and WANGFANG are searched for relevant articles about epidemiological study of #dementia.

#Epidemiological study of Dementia in China, Japan, America and Europe by Bo Zhou in BJSTR

Abstract

#Depression is a highly prevalent disorder, which is characterized by over-reaction, #rumination, and cognitive decline. Less than 40% of depressed patients in clinical practice can be relieved after the first treatment with antidepressants [1], and about 35% of patients have a lack of response to treatment and become treatment-resistant depression (TRD) [2]. Considerable effort has been devoted to trying to find effective treatments for TRD. Studies to date have found that long-term vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can effectively reduce the degree of depression in some patients [3]. In 2005, the United States Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) approved VNS as an adjunctive treatment for patients with TRD. However, invasive VNS not only has high surgical costs but also has the risk of postoperative infection. The transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) in recent years, although still in its early stages, has shown potential for mild and moderate major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and its #efficacies are similar to those of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS )[4,5].

Abstract

Motor control alteration of jaw movement after major prosthetic work is a common problem in the field of dental #prosthodontics. More teeth are missing in the oral cavity, more complicated is the clinical situation and more requirements are needed for the treatment plan and #prostheticappliances, removable are they or fixed, to achieve stability and satisfaction. In some cases, it could be difficult to achieve acceptable final results following traditional treatment modalities and a deviation from the norms is necessary. This paper discusses a clinical case of removable overdenture adapted with slight modification from the traditional concepts in #edentulouspatient.

Background: Assessment of #clinicalinterface of macular retinal thickness and #circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) thickness, optic nerve disc (OND) parameters using optical coherence #tomography (OCT)and visual field mean deviation in the large scale case-control study were combined to produce a better diagnostic strategy for early glaucoma detection, #monitoring and prognosis.

Materials and Methods: It was the case-control study comprising 45-74 years old men and women of 499 healthy and198 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). All the study subjects underwent full #ophthalmologicalinvestigation and OCT scanning of the macula, cpRNFL and OND. The statistical analysis was done.

Abstract

Activated charcoal has the ability to adsorb #toxicmaterials, substances, poisons introduced to #digestivesystem including stomach and #intestine. The objectives of this study were to review the literature for updates in using activated charcoal for therapeutic purposes. The recent evidence of literature supports the idea of using single use of activated charcoal (SDAC) following overdose of a toxin, chemical substance, drug, or poison. The best results are obtained if activated #charcoal is administered immediately following the intake of the chemical substance, however after 6 hours, SDAC still works efficiently. Low doses of activated charcoal can be given, particularly if side effects are likely to be encountered.

The Appropriate Use of Activated Charcoal in Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Approaches by  Ahed J Alkhatib in BJSTR

Abstract

#Prolongedcoldstorage (CS) of kidneys before #transplantation (Tx) is associated with poor renal outcome after Tx. We recently showed that, in rats, renal function was severely compromised in kidneys subjected to CS and then TX (CS/Tx), as compared to those transplanted without CS (autotransplantation, ATx). Evaluation of whole-kidney extracts from our rat model showed a subset of #proteins induced after CS/ Tx; this study examined those proteins. Kidneys of male Lewis rats exposed to CS/Tx were compared those exposed to ATx (i.e., removed and immediately reattached) or sham. Our study using mass spectrometry identified #albumin in extracts of kidneys that underwent sham; albumin levels modestly increased after ATx and dramatically increased after CS/Tx.

Albumin Level in Transplanted Kidneys is Higher in Those That Underwent Cold Storage Before #Transplantation by Nirmala Parajuli in BJSTR

Abstract

Evaluation of #Canthaldimensions can be employed in identification of the sex, age and ethnicity. It is also a vital part of craniofacial anthropometry. This study was aimed at obtaining normal values of canthal dimensions in adults of the #Ejaghamethnicgroup in Cross River State of South-South Nigeria. A total of Five hundred subjects (250 males and 250 females) aged 18-45 years were recruited for this study. The subjects were measured for #innercanthaldistance (ICD) and outercanthal distance (OCD) with a nonstretchable plastic ruler and canthal index (CI) was obtained as the ratio of inner canthal distance and the outer canthal distance multiplied by 100. The results we obtained showed that Ejagham males and females had outer canthal distances of 11.42 cm and 11.23 cm, respectively, whereas inner canthal distances were 3.40 cm for Ejagham males and 3.20 cm for the Ejagham females.

Marijuana, which is a substance derived from the cannabis sativa process, has become by far the most widely used illegal drug of abuse or hallucinogenic substance in the world; the national #addiction survey shows that it still occupies by far the first place among the addictions of this group of substances, data that coincide between this survey, the multiple care centers that had their growth in the past #administration, and #treatment centers by particular way, as well as forensic medical services and hospital emergency services. You have begun to observe your #consumption since eleven years, and in our country there is a number of around one million people between the ages of 12 and 65 who are heavily dependent on one or more drugs, and it is calculated at the end of the day that in Mexico there are up to one and a half million people who consume marijuana.

Abstract

The #saphena vein grafts used in coronary artery bypass grafting operations are used in majority of patients because of the need for multiple grafts and the high level of availability. The graft deficiency observed in saphena vein grafts especially because of the surgical technic reasons is one of the most important limiting factors of these operations. We aimed to represent our reconstruction method in order to prevent the #malposition because of #incompliance between the graft size and the required size, and the consequent possible early deficiencies. The stem cell content and secondary contributions of pericardial fat tissue, which is our reconstruction material that can be applied easily, fast, and effectively, are among the promising achievements of our practice.

Renal Metastases in the Thyroid Gland:Is it a new Trend? by Marica Grasso in BJSTR

Abstract

In this article we show a simple and free method to carry out the entire #OSCE evaluation process allowing the almost immediate recording of the results obtained by the #examiners. The process is completely online, eliminating, therefore, the need to manually fill out checklists in paper and the subsequent analysis of all these results. The method begins with the preparation of these checklists that, once finished, will allow them to be filled online from laptops or tablets, even from #smartphones. All this can be made fast with the use of the Google Forms system. In relation to the commercial systems already present in the market, we #emphasize that the system we present stands out for its simplicity, immediacy and, most of all, free of charge.

Abstract

“#Incidentaloma” has been generally used to describe an asymptomatic lesion incidentally detected by imaging studies or biochemical diagnostic tests. The first report about “#PancreaticIncidentaloma” (PI) was published in Russian literature in 2001. Incidental pancreatic cysts series have been gradually reported since them. Nowadays we have better developed radiologic studies such as #ultrasonography, CT, and MRI, which have been widely used. This explains how we could detect more PIs. The main issues we are concerned with are the lesion characteristics if we have options to safely observe or to remove it, which depends on risk of malignancy. Choosing proper investigations for PI is a challenging issue to take the risk of either surgery or untreated #pancreatic cancer. However, despite decreased operative risk due to better technologies and operative techniques, postoperative morbidity is still as high as 40%. The basic principle for preoperative assessment consists of avoidance of unnecessary surgery, especially when the lesion is less likely to be #malignant, and respectability determination, if the lesion contains malignant features. The patient’s information, history taking, physical examination, investigations (pancreatic protocol CT/MRI/MRCP) play an important role in making a diagnosis. Besides these, there are many other useful tools, such as serum markers, endoscopic ultrasound, and staging laparoscopy. Pancreatic mass workup remains a challenging clinical task, but can be approached by a thoughtful structural approach.

Abstract

There are lots of publications last time about important role of #neuroglialinteractions in normal physiology of nervous system. Some of them infer that neuroglial interactions may support survival of #neuronal and #glialcells. Study the mechanisms of neuroglial interactions needs convenient models which are simple nervous system. They could be easily isolated and studied while retain natural #neuroglialrelations. The purpose of present work was to estimate glia protective properties of giant axons in simple model – crayfish ventral nerve cord, upon photo oxidative stress. To better visualize the axons shape and reveal the #periaxonalglialcells, we were filling of the axons with fluorescent label by means of specially devised #microinjector. It enabled us to reveal the glial cells which are in close proximity to the axons. Such glial cells were found to have increased survival in compare to more distant ones from the axons under oxidative stress.

Abstract

In this paper the author describes the morphological and #immunohistochemical features of the most common benign epithelial lesions of the salpinx, which can be mistaken for neoplastic malignancies (#pseudoneoplasticlesions), on microscopic and, sometimes, also on macroscopic examination. Moreover, here it was demonstrated that both #morphologicclinicaldata and immunohistochemical features are useful for an accurate differential pathological diagnosis from non-neoplastic lesions and serous tubal #intraepithelialcarcinoma (STIC) and invasive #carcinoma.

Abstract

Unilateral #genitalhypertrophy is rare phenomenon, occurring in both boys and girls. due to their rarity and laterality, these can be misdiagnosed as malignant tumors, resulting in unnecessary #biopsy or operation. Therefore, correct recognition of these tumor mimickers is important. We presented representative cases of childhood asymmetrical labium majus enlargement (CALME) and unilateral enlargement of the testis. Typical radiological feature of CALME is the unilateral swelling of labia majora with #heterogeneous signal intensity with low-intensity strands on magnetic resonance imaging. On the other hand, #homogenousenlargement is the key feature for unilateral enlargement of the testis.

Abstract

#Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health concern even in South Korea. TB incidence in South Korea is the highest among Organisation for Eoconomic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, and is supposed to be due to the Korean War in 1950. TB has not yet been eradicated, and is the most common infection and death among infectious diseases in South Korea. Therefore, there is a need for a method to diagnose active tuberculosis quickly and inexpensively on site, and the detection of #mycobacterialproteins in sputum using a #radioimmunoassay or #membranefiltration method can be an alternative. In addition, the newly developed diagnostic method can contribute greatly to Africa, Southeast Asia, and North Korea, which have become major problems with tuberculosis.

Introduction: In the past 40 years, the literature has attempted to clarify the evidence on the effect of early auditory deprivation caused by early otitis media with effusion (OME) on #centralauditoryprocessing (CAP). Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the scientific evidence on the effects of auditory deprivation caused by early OME on the CAP of children and adolescents. Data Synthesis: A systematic search was conducted in the following databases: #ScientificElectronicLibrary Online (Scielo), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde–LILACS), PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane databases from the earliest publication, up until October 2016. Prospective studies that reported children or #adolescents (aged less than 18 years) with early OME in the first years of life.
