Lack of region specific guidelines on sun exposure for acquiring optimal #vitaminD could be a bottle neck for developing effective education strategies for Indian population. We calculated the required sun exposure time for each day for one year considering 10 % exposure, type V skin accounting for 1000 IU of vitamin D per day for clear and cloudy sky conditions. The UV Index provided by TEMIS satellite for 10 Indian stations ranging in latitude from 8 degree to 38 degrees for 1 year were obtained, and were converted to the vitamin D effective UV radiation, applied minimal #erythemal doses and Holicks rule. Attenuation of UV radiation due to clouds was accounted for by using data on daily clouds measured in octas from Agricultural meteorology database. The seasonal variations were also accounted for. Our data showed a latitude-dependent change in sun exposure time. A seasonal variation was also observed. After accounting for clouds, an exposure of 30-35 minutes appeared to be sufficient in all stations except for Srinagar. Seasonal variations were high in stations ranging from 14 minutes to 133 minutes. About 75 % of the days were conducive for sun exposure in the stations studied. The estimated sun exposure time, if validated, can be a useful tool for behavioural change communication facilitating safe sun exposure for satisfying vitamin D status in tropical countries like India.

Abstract

Purpose:Pain in #Osteoidosteoma has always been treated with Non Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) with satisfactory results. Recent researches reveal that pain is related to cyclooxigenase-2 (COX-2) secretion. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the pain response in patients with #Osteoidosteoma after the administration of a selective COX-2 inhibitor (Etoricoxib). Methods:A prospective study was made of consecutive patients diagnosed in our centre for Osteoid osteoma between January 2010 and December 2016. A total of 20 patients were enrolled (15 men and 5 women). Pain was collected in 3 stages: 1) treatment with #NSAIDs 2) 1 month after treatment with Etoricoxib and 3) Final pain, 2 years after inclusion in the study. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to determine the pain. Six months after starting treatment, possible gammagraphy changes due to treatment were assessed in patients who refused surgical treatment by radiofrequency (RFA).
Results: One month after treatment with Etoricoxib the nocturnal pain improved from 1.85 ± 0.59 to 0.93 ± 0.41, and the diurnal pain improved from 1.58 ± 0.50 to 0.40 ± 0.30 compared to when they were taking conventional NSAIDs (p<0.05). Gammagraphy was assessed in five of the patients finding no trazer uptake. Final VAS found no pain differences between those patients who underwent RFA and those who did not.
Conclusion: Treatment of Osteoid osteoma with Etoricoxib is more effective than conventional NSAIDs, and may be a better treatment for those patients who refuse a surgical treatment or if it is not indicated due to excessive morbidity.

Abstract

To calculate the individual (personalized) level of #cardiovascular and respiratory synchronization, the method of continuous #spiroarteriocardiorhythmography in dynamic is suggest, the technique is certified and licensed in the Russian Federation (№29/03020703/5869-04, №7569782 ). The equipment ability to summarize all values of the shock volume per minute allows measuring the Cardiac output (CO). Jointly conducted ultrasonic spirometry in the dynamics record the volume and frequency of each inhalation/ exhalation is evaluated respiratory minute volume (RMV). The ratio CO/RMV is an objective indicator of measurement cardiovascular and #respiratorysynchronization. At present, the Robinson index or rate pressure product (RPP) (RPP= Heart Rate (HR) * Systolic Blood Pressure) is used as the integral index of functional re sponse of blood circulation. The experimental group of volunteers (63 people, 21 men and 42 women, and the average age of 19±2,3) allowed to differentiate the three groups, because we found a pronounced individual variability of RPP, which statistical significant differences was by functional stress at rest. In (Table 1) is shown the average performance of the CO, the RMV, the ratio CO/RMV and their variability for each group.

Abstract

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is classically defined as abnormal #arteriovenous connections between an arterial feeder and a dural venous sinus or #leptomeningealvein with the channels located within the dural leaflets [1]. Onyx is a non-adhesive liquid embolic agent and does not polymerize. The dimethyl sulfoxide can diffuse under aqueous conditions and occlude mechanically the feeders [2]. We describe transarterialembolization with dual-lumen balloon microcatheter with Onyx (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) for dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) of sinus confluence.

Abstract

Traditional methods to predict cancer survival include Competing-Risk Regression and Cox Proportional Hazards Regression; both require the hazard of input variables to be proportionate, limiting the use of non-proportionate measurements on #miRNA inhibitors and inflammatory #cytokines. They also require imputation at missing data before prediction, adding fallible workloads to the clinical practitioners. To get around the two requirements, we applied Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) to two patient datasets including the NCCTG lung cancer dataset (228 patients, 7 #clinicopathologicalvariables) and the TCGA #Glioblastoma (GBM) miRNA sequencing dataset (211 patients, 533 mRNA measurements) to predict the 5-year survival. RBM has achieved a c-statistic of 0.989 and 0.826 on the two datasets, outperforming Cox Proportional Hazards Regression that achieved 0.900 and 0.613, respectively.

Journal of Biomedical Research and Reviews

Abstract

This study addresses issues specifically related to the underwater dynamic actuation of #Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), such as micro-cantilevers or comb-drive #microstructures. As a practical application, cantilevers made using MUMPs (Multi-User MEMS Processes) foundry are considered. Since the gap between the cantilevers and the underlying surface is very narrow (about 2 μm), water does not always flow easily underneath the cantilevers, especially when the surface is hydrophobic with respect to the liquid environment. As long as the MEMS surface is #hydrophobic, the lower the gap, the higher the pressure required to flow into micro-channels or gaps .As a consequence, this issue significantly modifies cantilevers’ performances. To gain an insight of the phenomenon, a new measurement technique was developed, referred to as MFTEC (MEMS Freezing by Thermo Electric Cooling), which can verify the presence of water under cantilevers or other micro-devices.

Abstract

#Tendons and #ligaments are similar dense fibrous connective tissues that connect skeletal muscle to the skeletal elements (bone) and bone to bone, respectively. The main function of ligaments and tendons is to transmit tensile loads. The most commonly damaged tendons and ligaments are those that run down the back of the limbs from the stifle/elbow to the hoof (the superficial digital flexor tendon, the deep digital #flexortendon, the accessory ligaments and the suspensor ligament). The objective of this seminar paper is to review tendon and ligament repair techniques. Most tendon strains are associated with excessive loading and overstretching of the tendon due to excessive #physicalstress. The end result of tendon and ligament injury is inflammation which manifested in pain, lameness, heat and swelling (typical ‘bowed’ appearance).

#ChronicAtopicDermatitis (AD) is inadequately managed in the primary health care and hospital settings [1,2]. Steroid phobia, emergence of methicillin resistant #Staphylococcusaureus (MRSA), poor compliance to #emollientstherapy, inaccessibility to costly biologics and lack of effective preventive measures are all real problems to service providers taking care of children and adults suffering from this chronic distressing illness. Behavior disturbances, fear, anxiety, social isolation, stress and depression are negative emotional factors well reported associated with intractable #pruritusof chronic AD [3].

Biomedical Research Articles

Abstract

In India the out-of-pocket (OOP) health care expenditure (about 70%) is much more in comparison with many other countries (only 10% in the UK). The high OOP leads to impoverishment of many families. Every hospital admission pushes many families from APL status into BPL status (addition per year is around 6%). High prices for medicines and other pharmaceutical products, high doctor’s fee and prescription of high priced medicine for ordinary diseases and unnecessary operations are some of the reasons for high OOP. Of all these reasons the ever rising prices of #pharmaceuticalproducts(many #branded drugs are sold at 200 to 500% profit margin though many are under price control) is the most important one. Prices of many drugs are fixed arbitrarily, much higher than their cost of production (100 to 200% more).

Abstract

A CT Scan (#ComputedTomography) is the accepted “Gold Standard” for #diagnosis, treatment planning as well as follow ups of almost all bodily cancers. We, as oncologists, are so much engrossed in prescribing CT’s that we fail to ponder upon the “radiation dose” conferred by each scan to our patient. To contemplate, with each scan, a patient receives anything between 18-34mGy of #radiation[1,2]. This ionizing radiation in itself is associated with its own health hazards and even considered responsible for the development of future cancers [1,2]. Berrington et al. [2] in their study of CT Scans performed in the US, in one year, projected that nearly 30,000 future cancers were likely to occur, due to CT Scans done in one year, with greater than 50% contribution from #Abdomino-Pelvic CT Scans [2].

Abstract

#Intracellularsodiumion functions as an initiating signal for #organregeneration in lower vertebrates, such as amphibians, Intracellular sodium ion concentration ([Na+]) was regulated by voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav). However, whether intracellular [Na+] is also involved in mammalian organ regeneration is unknown, because of lacking suitable mammalian models. Deer antlers are a novel model for studying mammalian organ #morphogenesis. It is now well known that antlers generate from #antlerogenicperiosteum (AP) and regenerate from pedicle (antecedent of antler) periosteum (PP). Cells from the AP and PP have stem cell attributes, thus termed antler stem cells. In the present study, the intracellular sodium ion of the cells from the AP, PP and facial periosteum (FP) were strained in vitro with CoroNa Green indicator dye.
