Abstract

Despite the discovery of Lassa fever nearly five decades ago, the #disease is still endemic in West Africa. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control’s (NCDC) weekly epidemiological report for the first 10 weeks in the year 2018 shows that there were 157 confirmed cases and 56 deaths from Lassa fever outbreak and an upward trend in the case fatality rate in the last three years. This study aims to identify gaps in disease preparedness and propose recommendations in the event of future outbreaks. Some of the notable challenges impeding on preparedness include the annual repeated morbidity and #mortality among healthcare workers who cater for #infectedpatients. Furthermore, there is an observed occurrence of epidemics in regions with higher altitudes and environments with rocky terrains.

Abstract

The resolution of #alkalineproteins by 2D-polyacrylamide #gelelectrophoresis (2D-PAGE) is often accompanied by protein streak artifacts. To overcome this type of artifact formed during traditional 2D-PAGE, and to further improve the resolution of alkaline proteins, we developed a DeStreak ™ protocol that essentially eliminates the streaking artifact through the use of #hydroethyldisulfide (HED) throughout the entire IEF run. We found that HED improves the separation and resolution of individual basic #proteins when using a narrow range (pH 7-10) IPG strip format.

Optimization Strategies for Improving the Resolution of Alkaline Proteins Using 2D-Gel #Electrophoresis by Robert J Hickey in BJSTR

Abstract

Samples were collected from water, soil, honey and Sewage. Bacteria with ability to produce cysteine were isolated. 50 bacteria were isolated, of which 20 produced amino acids like lysine, #cysteine, #methionine, glutamic acid, Valine etc. From 20 isolates only 05 produced significant amount of cysteine. The cysteine production by bacteria was improved using different fermentation media and #mutation including UV rays and with #nitrousoxide. Using different fermentation media, bacterial strains produced different amount of cysteine. Bacterial strain MM5 produced significant cystiene which was 7.8gram/litre.

Abstract

Lichen planus (LP) is a distinctive entity with #prototypic “lichenoid” papules that show distinctive color and morphology, develop in typical locations, and manifest characteristic patterns of evolution. Microscopic features, similar to the gross #morphology, are distinctive although the microscopic pattern of inflammation and skin response is shared by several #dermatome. Lichen planus (Greek leichen, “tree moss”; Latin planus, “flat”) is a unique, common inflammatory disorder that affects the skin, mucous membranes, nails, and hair [1]. The term lichenoid reaction is the histologic description used to capsulize the #pathologiccharacteristics of #skindiseases resembling Lichen Panus.

Oral Lichen Planus- a #Mucopigmentory Disorder by Neha Aggarwal in BJSTR

Abstract

The terms #gingivalprosthesis, gingival #epithesis or gum mask are used to describe the replacement of lost gingival tissue with a removable prosthesis. This case report aimed to clarify the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of making a gum epithesis in a 21-year-old female #patient with aggressive #periodontitis, who attended Clínica de Especializaçãoem Periodontia from the Associação Brasileira de Odontologia-Pernambuco Section with losses of #interdentalpapillae on the anterior superior and aesthetic complaint about “dark spaces”. The patient underwent basic periodontal treatment consisting of scaling and root planning and oral hygiene orientation, aiming the stability of #periodontalinflammation. However, the loss of anterior gingiva was still noticeable. Looking for a functional and aesthetic solution for this problem, gingival epithesis or removable artificial gingiva in acrylic resin was suggested to complement the treatment.

Since 1856 when Louis Pasteur proved that infections originate from #bacteria the germ theory has been the central paradigm in treating infectious disorders [1,2] (Figure 1). Of significance, the #germtheory destined Antoine Bechamp, Pasteur’s arch rivalto scientific obscurity while Pasteur became a legend of modern #medicine. Today not many physicians even heard of Bechamp or his transformation theory: Body fluids -#microsoma- may generate bacteria and infections [3,4]. Surprisingly a novel hypotheses” Human body may produce bacteria “published in Medical Hypotheses [5] in June 2017 has not drawn any scientific attention despite offering compelling evidence to suggest that although Bechamp failed to offer experimental evidence to support” bacterial growth by transformation.

Abstract

The term #Leukoplakia simply means a “white patch”, and it has been used in a sense to describe any white lesion in the mouth. This non-specific usage led to confusion among physician, #surgeons and researchers who attributed a precancerous nature to many innocuous #lesions. Some investigators tried, although unsuccessfully, to restrict this term only to those white lesions that histologically indicated epithelial #dysplasia. Since the mid-1960s there has been a considerable understanding and clarification in the concept of leukoplakia, and now leukoplakia is recognized as a specific entity.

Abstract

Nearly 90 million Americans suffer from #chronic back pain and eventually get habituated to opioid #pain medication hoping for long term relief. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) evolved over 4 decades as an alternative and effective pain management therapeutic modality, especially in failed back surgery #syndrome (FBSS). However technology limitations due to the bulk of the equipment and the limited frequency utilized in the stimulation restricted SCS applications. Over the past few years several advancements in nanotechnology and innovative minimally invasive surgical techniques have shown promising results. They also have a potential for less #tissue damage, reduced hospital time and health care costs.

After a while she got normal and got back up and straight away went to get a plaster fir the scratch. A kid of this age could barely tie her shoe laces, but she knew how to cover her wound, so it doesn’t get infected.

Abstract

The standard treatment for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) consists of optimal #cytoreductivesurgery followed by platinum-based#chemotherapy [1-2]. #Bevacizumab has been approved for the treatment of several tumors such as #colorectal cancer, non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, renal cell carcinoma, epithelial ovarian, #fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers. The use of #antiangiogenic agent in EOC is based on the results of randomized clinical trials which revealed an improved survival rates with the addition of bevacizumab to standard first-line #chemotherapeuticdrugs [3- 4].

Abstract

Trained innate #immunity attracts more and more attention in recent years. Innate immune memory is observed in natural killer cells, #monocytes and #macrophages after being trained by certain antigens and non-specific strong immune responses may occur after the secondary stimulation. Mechanism studies reveal that induction of trained innate immunity depends on #epigenetic reprogramming. In this article, the phenomenon, mechanisms and possible applications of the trained innate immunity are reviewed.

Abstract

A hangover is a syndrome of physical and #mental symptoms that occurs after 8 to 16 hours of #consumption with a zero level of alcohol. The objective of the study is to explore effects of the alcohol hangover. The impairing effects on memory functioning such as delayed recall, irritation, lack of concentration and after acute alcohol #intoxication. Normally the body might use cytokines to trigger fever of inflammatory response to battle infection leading to unpleasant effects include nausea, vomiting, #dizziness, fatigue and hormonal imbalance in the body. Dehydration is believed to be the cause of hangover as it leads to anti-diuresis state in the body. The most compelling theory that, at the moment, is that hangover results from a buildup of #acetaldehyde, a toxic compound in the body. The congener amount in the particular alcoholic beverage is believed to be increase the extent of severity of hangover.

Alcohol Hangover- its Effects on Human Body: Review by Loveleen Bajaj in BJSTR

Abstract

Introduction: Eradication rates of many therapeutic regimens for #Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection are not yet satisfactorily, mainly due to bacterial #resistance to #antibiotics, and to a limited availability of antibiotics in children.

Materials and Methods: Fifty-three children with H. pylori infection were prospectively enrolled, characterized by clinic, endoscopic findings and antibiotic resistance and treated with sequential therapy (ST cohort); this cohort was compared with an historic cohort of 106 children treated with standard triple therapy (TT cohort). The eradication rate of the two treatments was obtained, based on antibiotic resistance towards amoxicillin (AMO), #metronidazole (MET), and #clarithromycin (CLA).

Can Sequential Therapy Overcome #AntimicrobialResistance in Children with Helicobacter pylori Infection? by Federica Gaiani in BJSTR

Abstract

Activity of key #antioxidant enzymes plays a critical role in the induction of #hyperglycemia related #tissue damage. Gum Arabic (GA) is an edible, dried sticky exudate from #Acaciaseyal and Acacia Senegal and is rich with non-viscous soluble fiber. It is commonly used in food industry and pharmaceutical field as an emulsifier and preservative. It has strong antioxidant properties, and used to reduce the experimental #nephrotoxicity against #gentamicin, cisplatin and to ameliorate #cardiotoxicity. However, the effects of GA on oxidative stress in liver of type I diabetic rats have not been reported. Whether GA can change oxidative related genes expression in liver of type I diabetic rat remains less clear. In the present study, we used type I diabetic rat model to investigate our hypothesis that supplementation of GA in drinking water may protect liver by reducing oxidative damage.
