Statins Related Reduction In Major Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias (TV/FV) In Patients With Ischemic #Cardiopathy Undergoing ICD Implantation For Primary Prevention by Massimiliano Manfrin in BJSTR

Abstract

Purpose: to evaluate the #anti-arrhythmiceffect of #statins in patients receiving an implantable #cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) for ventricular #tachycardia/ventricular #fibrillation (VT/VF).
Methods: 85 patients with ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy undergoing ICD implantation for sudden cardiac death (SCD) prevention (primary prevention) were enrolled in the study. 63 patients (72%) were on treatment with statins (group 1), and 22 were not (group 2). The following end points were analyzed: recurrences of #ventriculararrhythmias (VA) requiring ICD intervention and mortality.
Results: after a median follow up of 46.2 months (interquartile range 26.9 - 72.8 months) 28 patients (32.9%) had at least one VA which required ICD intervention. #Multivariateanalysis showed that treatment with #statins was the only independent predictor of arrhythmic events reduction (events requiring ICD intervention) (p=0.042). Under the 63 patients of group 1, 17 (27%) had appropriate ICD intervention, while under the 22 patients of group 2, 11 (50%) had appropriate ICD intervention (p=0.0185). The mortality in group 1 was 28.6% (18 patients), while in group 2 was 50% (11 patients) (p=0.0284).

Major Compounds from Ocimum Basilicum l. and their #AntimicrobialActivity against Methicillin-Resistant #StaphylococcusAureus by Thongchai Taechowisan in BJSTR

Abstract

Sweet Basil (#OcimumbasilicumLinn.) has a variety of #therapeuticproperties, including antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the major chemical components in the crude extract against #methicillin resistant #Staphylococcusaureus (MRSA) isolated from the clinical specimens. TLC and column chromatography resulted in the separation of two major compounds. On the basis of the spectral data, they were identified as #linalool (1) and 1,8-cineole (2). #Antibacterialactivity of crude extract and isolated compounds was evalusted by disc diffusion, MIC and MBC against 9 multi-drug resistance S. aureus isolated from clinical specimens. The crude extract and isolated compounds exhibited an excellent antimicrobial activity at a dose level of 34.5 mg/disc for disc diffusion method. The crude extract and linalool showed higher activity against tested MRSA with MIC (<0.09 mg/ml) and MBC (≤ 0.09 to 0.38 mg/ml) than 1,8-cineole. The results suggest once again that the antimicrobial activity of the crude extract and major isolated compounds, linalool and 1,8-cineole are a resultant of the #antibacterialproperty against MRSA.

#OxidativeDamage of Carotid Arteries in #DiabeticPatients by Ioannis Mamarelis in BJSTR

Abstract

In the present study, FT-IR spectra were used to study the carotid arteries of 20 #diabeticpatients. From the comparison of infrared spectra between insulin-dependent (type II) diabetic patients or diabetics on #oralhypoglycemicdrug treatment with the corresponding patient spectra having normal blood glucose levels, it was found that insulin-dependent(type II) diabetic patients showed more pronounced changes throughout the #absorption spectrum range (4000-800 cm-1). Particularly, the observed increase of the intensities of the stretching vibration bands of ethylene (vCH2) groups indicated that the #lipophilicenvironment of the membranes is significantly altered. This conclusion is attributed to the increase in the destructive effect of free radicals produced during oxidative stress in diabetics. Also from the shifts of the amide I and amide II absorption bands to lower frequencies it is concluded that the secondary structure of proteins has been changed from α-helix to β-sheet and random coil. The most significant changes were observed in the area where the C-O-C groups of sugars and C-O-P-O sugar-phosphate groups of DNA and #phospholipids absorb as a result of the disease.

Treatment of #FemoralNeckFractures with Dynamic Hip Screw in Young Adults by Mustufa Pervez in BJSTR

Abstract

#Dynamichipscrews have been a mainstay of treatment for #intertrochantericfractures of the proximal femur and are also used to treat femoral neck fractures. Femoral neck fractures are usually common in older age but can also present in younger individual usually due to high energy trauma. Treatment of these fractures in young adults is debated due to higher energy demands of the age and need to salvage the bone instead of opting for a hemi arthroplasty or total #hiparthroplasty as with older patients. Different other treatment options such as multiple #cannulatedscrews have also been proposed but there still lies no consensus for the ideal treatment of such fractures. Displaced fractures are commonly associated with a vascular necrosis of the femoral head and multiple researches have been performed in this regard but if success of union occurs after a Dynamic hip screw is performed, the patient is able to regain his near physiological hip. Good bone quality and no comorbids usually present as an advantage in younger patients but still the surgery haunts orthopedic surgeons with its non-union and a vascular necrosis rates. Good anatomical reduction and stable fixation remains a mainstay of the treatment and can be perpetuated by a further use of a de-rotation screw.

Agro-Industrial Residues Utilization for #SurfactinProduction: Cassava Wastewater by Cristiano José de Andrade in BJSTR

Abstract

#Biosurfactants are #amphiphiliccompounds produced, essentially, by #microbialcells. The production/applications of biosurfactants are aligned to the green chemistry concept, which includes antimicrobial (bacteria, fungal, mycoplasma, etc), microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), and emulsification, among others [1]. Surfactin, one of the most well-know biosurfactants, was first found in 1968 by Arima, Kakinuma e Tamura [2]. Currently, there are a few #surfactin manufacturers as Lipofabrik and Sigma Aldrich that use mineral salt media for surfactin production. Regarding surfactin production, the culture medium represents ≈ 30% total production cost. Thus, some agro-industrial residues have been investigated as alternative culture medium such as olive mill waste, brewery wastewaters, sugarcane and beet molasses, whey, cassava wastewater, etc [3]. In this sense, the cassava processing industry generates ≈ 300 liters of cassava wastewater/ton of cassava, residue which currently has not industrial application. Cassava wastewater contains high minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc), carbon and nitrogen concentrations, which allow a good microbial growth: bacteria, fungi and yeasts.

#NeonatalSepsis Past to Present by Santosh Kumar Kamalakannan in BJSTR

Abstract

#Neonatalsepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by systemic signs of infection and #bacteremia in the neonatal period [1]. Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of #mortality and #neurodevelopmentalimpairment among #neonates. It contributes to nearly 30 % of neonatal deaths in developing countries [2]. Inherent factors like poorly developed innate #immunesystem, immature skin barrier, #mucosaldefense mechanisms and blood brain barrier contribute to the increased susceptibility of the neonates to infection .Early recognition and aggressive management plays a pivotal role in saving these neonates. Bacterial infections are the most common cause of septicemia in neonates but fungal and viral infections can occur in the setting of an extreme premature baby and by vertical #transmission from the mother.

The Effect of long Distance #Transportation Stress on Cattle: A Review by Ashenafi D in BJSTR

Abstract

The aim of this article is to review scholarly work carried out on the effect of long transportation stress. Stress due to long transportation of cattle can be measured by comparing baseline measurements when the animal is not subjected to a stress inducing factors, to those measured when an animal is experiencing a stressful event. Cattle transport produces physical, psychological, and climatic factors that affect animals with different intensities and duration. The most pervasive factors of long #transportation of cattle include, pre-transport management, the attitudes of stakeholders and inappropriate driving skills, laws and codes of practice, methods used during handling, loading and unloading, the design of vehicle and equipment used for loading, and poor road conditions. Other important factors causing stress are insufficient ventilation, high #stockingdensities, mixing of unfamiliar groups and social regrouping, feed and water deprivation, noise, vibration, novelty, time of transit and length of the journey, #genetic differences between #breeds, and payment of persons working with animals, actual physical #climaticcondition and risk of disease #transmission.

Simple, Rapid and Effective Separation of Nuclear #RedBloodCells from Peripheral Blood of Pregnant Women: Preliminary Study by Masato Kantake in BJSTR

Abstract

The analysis of #nuclearredbloodcells (NRBCs) in pregnant woman is believed to be a practical, noninvasive prenatal test that is much useful for understanding the prenatal fetal status. Here, we show a simple, rapid and effective method to separate NRBC from maternal peripheral blood with preterm labor. We used MACS Technology which is based on MACS #MicroBeads, highly specific antibodies coupled to super paramagnetic 50nm particles, MACS Columns containing a matrix of #ferromagneticspheres, and MACS Separators providing a strong magnetic field. This method could enrich the CD45-CD71+ cells from 0.3% of whole blood cells to 93% of separated cells. When the fetal cell ratio in these separated cells is high in some extent, our method may be useful for further analysis. The yield of NRBCs from 2ml of maternal blood by this method is enough to be used for not only targeted DNA #methylavtion analysis but whole exome and whole #transcriptomeanalysis using next generation sequencer which may lead to progress in #perinatology.

#Pleurotusostreatus and Trametes versicolor, Fungal Strains as Remedy for Recalcitrant Pharmaceuticals Removal Current Knowledge and Future Perspectives by Marcelina Jureczko in BJSTR

Abstract

The consumption of #pharmacologicallyactive substances (PhACs) is steadily increasing. According to their recalcitrant nature and low biodegradability in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), they occur in rivers, lakes, and even ground and drinking waters. Because of that PhACs are considered to be emerging #pollutants. Therefore new technologies which can be used to degrade them are investigated. Two white-rot fungi (WRF) strains: #Pleurotusostreatus and #Trametesversicolor show quite good PhACs removal values. Broad applications of active and inactivated form of biomass are possible due to different mechanisms of their action, such as #biodegradation by extracellular and #intercellularenzymes or #biosorption. Thus, the versatility for applying fungi, represent that this microorganisms are a promising tool to deal with problem of #pharmaceuticalcompounds elimination from the environment. In this work has been also presented future possibilities, like their application in waste water and sludge treatment or future perspectives of removal of different group of pharmaceuticals by this promising and environmentally friendly technology

Crossectional Study on the Prevalence And Economic Significance of #Hydatidosis in Slaughtered Ruminants at Debrezeit Elfora Export Abattoir Oromia Region Eastern Showa Zone, Ethiopia by Shimeles Abegaz in BJSTR

Abstract

An abattoir survey based study was conducted between November 2011 and March 2012 period, to determine the prevalence and economic significance of #hydatidosis in slaughtered #ruminants. During the study, Debrezeit Elfora export abattoir were visited twice a week to examine the internal organs (livers, lungs, kidney and hearts) for the presence of #hydatidcysts in ruminants and total 203 cattle, 384 sheep and 547 goats were examined for the presence of hydatid cyst. It was found that 42.86% of cattle, 7.03% of sheep and 4.39% of goats were infected with this disease. The cysts in cattle, sheep and goats (P < 0.05) were found mostly in lungs (41.4%, 7.03% and 4.39%) respectively, whereas the liver is second affected organ in all the three #species of animals (p< 0.05%). In addition to this, six, two and one kidneys in cattle, sheep and goats respectively and one #heart in cattle only were infected with hydatid cyst. In this study, the prevalence of hydatidosis and the number of cysts in ruminants were found different when the cattle, sheep and goats examined were stratified based on their age and body condition.

Insights of #PharmaceuticalCocrystals by Fpreshita P Desai in BJSTR

Abstract

Activepharmaceuticalingredients (API) and API drug products developments are facing impending challenges as approximately 60-70% of newly discovered APIs belong to #biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) Class II (poor solubility, good #permeability) or BCS Class IV (poor solubility, poor permeability) which results in low #oralbioavailability [1]. The conventional approaches of formulating API salts and amorphous APIs are also limiting because in most of these cases APIs either lack #ionizablefunctionalities or do not have strong ionization to allow salt formation. Also, solubility enhanced amorphous form of APIs are #thermodynamically unstable and are prone to transformation in more stable but less soluble crystalline form upon storage. Further, pH gradient across #gastrointestinaltrack adds an additional challenge as some of these APIs possess variable pH dependent solubility and some are unstable or are prone to degradation. In this context, alternative approaches are being researched extensively.
